The Yankees have once again turned to the international market to secure a highly sought-after teenage prospect from the Dominican Republic, believing he has the potential to make a significant impact in their system over time.
Mani Cedeno, ranked as MLB Pipeline’s No. 11 international prospect, is the marquee signing of the Yankees’ 2025 class. A shortstop from the renowned baseball-producing region of San Pedro de Macorís, Cedeno’s skills are highly regarded, especially his potential as a shortstop.
Cedeno’s deal is valued at $2.5 million, with the Yankees receiving $6.26 million in pool money this year.
At 16 years old for nearly all of his first professional season, Cedeno’s well-rounded abilities have scouts excited about his future potential. He trains at the Paulino Baseball Academy, under Daniel Brito, a part of MLB’s Trainer Partnership Program.
Cedeno’s swing is marked by impressive bat speed and a smooth, balanced right-handed approach. His ability to generate power is just starting to develop, and his athleticism suggests he could become a strong defender and base runner. Scouts praise his soft hands when receiving the ball and his footwork, which helps him make a range of plays. His arm strength still has room to grow, but he is already known for making clean, accurate throws.
The Yankees’ recent success in the international market includes high-profile signings like Jasson Domínguez ($5.1 million in 2019), Roderick Arias ($4 million in 2022), and Brando Mayea ($4.35 million in 2023), all of whom were highly ranked in their classes. For Cedeno, though, it’s important to remember that international prospect development can take time. Arias, also a shortstop, is still just 20 years old and is progressing through Single-A.
The Yankees’ focus on international talent has significantly boosted their prospect pool, with 12 of their current Top 30 prospects coming from the international market, creating a strong mix of pitchers and position players across various positions.
International players are eligible to sign between Jan. 15 and Dec. 15, and must turn 16 before signing and be 17 by Sept. 1 of the following year. Players born between Sept. 1, 2007, and Aug. 31, 2008, are eligible for the current signing period.
