NEWS-NOW: ‘Agreed’ – Newcastle United strike first major January transfer deal for £21m Champions League goal hero

The transfer fee, believed to be around £10 million, will mark Newcastle’s first major deal of the transfer window, with Almiron set to return to his previous club. The Paraguayan winger had joined the Magpies from Atlanta for a reported club-record £21 million in 2019.

After six years, 222 appearances, and 30 goals for Newcastle — including the club’s first Champions League goal in over 20 years during the 4-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain in 2023 — Almiron is now expected to return to MLS. According to The Telegraph, Newcastle has reached an agreement with Atlanta over the transfer fee, though personal terms between Almiron and the club are still under discussion.

While contract negotiations aren’t seen as a major obstacle, the deal has progressed slowly since an initial proposal about two weeks ago. Almiron has continued to train and remains part of Newcastle’s matchday squad.

He was an unused substitute in last weekend’s 4-1 loss to Bournemouth, which was expected to be his last game at St James’ Park, but the 30-year-old trained ahead of the upcoming match against Southampton at St Mary’s on Saturday.

Ahead of the game, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe stated that Almiron will remain part of his plans for now.

“I think Miggy’s head has been very, very solidly here,” Howe said when asked about Almiron’s situation. “He’s been brilliant in training this week. I haven’t seen any indication that we need to address anything or have any deep conversations.

“We both understand the situation. Yes, there is interest from other clubs, and there’s a chance he could leave before the window closes, but until that happens — or if it doesn’t — he’s still a valuable member of the squad. We love him, his energy and character are unchanged, and he’s been the ultimate professional. Let’s see what happens.”

Newcastle’s squad traveled to Southampton on Friday afternoon, despite Storm Eowyn, as Howe’s side aims to secure a 10th win in 11 matches against the Premier League’s bottom team.
