In the years before Darius Slay joined the Philadelphia Eagles, the team struggled with one of the worst secondaries in the league during the 2010s.
However, after acquiring the Pro Bowler from the Detroit Lions, Slay’s impact was immediate. Thanks to his performance as a lockdown cornerback, the Eagles have ranked in the top 10 in pass defense in three of the last four seasons.
As the team prepares for the NFC Championship Game against the Washington Commanders, the 34-year-old cornerback is aware that this Sunday’s game could be his last in an Eagles uniform.
Slay shared with Ashlyn Sullivan of NBC Sports Philadelphia that he is “preparing” for Sunday’s matchup to be his final home game with the team. He also mentioned he is “85 percent” inclined to play one more season, but “understands it most likely won’t be with the Eagles.
” With several young cornerbacks, including Kelee Ringo and Isaiah Rodgers, ready to step into Slay’s role, Philadelphia seems to be positioning itself for the future.
A move to cut or trade Slay before June 1 would create $22.75 million in dead cap space and an $8.97 million cap hit, but if designated as a post-June 1 cut or trade, the Eagles could save $4.324 million in cap space for 2025. This suggests that the Eagles may be focused on getting younger, meaning Slay could be nearing the end of his time in Philadelphia.
