The Yankees may revisit a familiar option this offseason, as Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that the team could target utility player Kiké Hernández in free agency. Hernández, a key depth player for the World Series-winning Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024, was on the Yankees’ radar last offseason when they reportedly made him a contract offer.
Hernández’s 2024 season wasn’t especially impressive offensively, but his defensive flexibility makes him an intriguing option. Over 126 games, he posted a .229/.281/.373 slash line with 12 home runs, 42 RBIs, a 19.6% strikeout rate, and a 6.9% walk rate, resulting in an 83 wRC+. These numbers were 17% below league average, but his ability to play almost every position on the field adds significant value.
Hernández has experience at first, second, third, shortstop, and all three outfield spots. This versatility is valuable, especially for a team like the Yankees, who have dealt with frequent injuries and roster changes in recent seasons.
However, New York already has a similar player in Oswaldo Cabrera, who brings defensive versatility and switch-hitting ability at a younger, more affordable price. Cabrera’s presence could make Hernández redundant, rather than filling a specific need for the Yankees.
The Yankees’ focus this offseason has been on building a championship-worthy roster. While depth is important, investing in Hernández might not significantly improve the team. If the Yankees are going to allocate resources, they would be better off pursuing a genuine upgrade to their infield or outfield, rather than adding another bench option.
