Less than a month after D.J. Smith left his position as Mizzou’s linebackers coach to become defensive coordinator at his alma mater, Appalachian State, head coach Eli Drinkwitz has found his replacement.
According to multiple reports, Missouri has hired Derek Nicholson, the former linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator at Miami (FL), to take over the role.
Nicholson spent the past two seasons with the Hurricanes, adding the title of co-defensive coordinator in 2024. Before his time at Miami, he had coaching stints at Louisville, Akron, Alcorn State, Southern Mississippi, and a return to Louisville.
A North Carolina native, Nicholson played at Florida State from 2006 to 2008, leading the team in tackles during his junior and senior years. His standout 2008 season included 15 tackles for loss and two fumble return touchdowns. Despite NFL interest from the Falcons and Seahawks, Nicholson transitioned to coaching after his playing career.
While Mizzou has yet to officially confirm the hire, this move would complete the coaching staff for the Tigers’ defense, filling the vacancy left by Smith’s departure.
