NEW YORK — The New York Mets appear to be planning for a possible future without longtime first baseman Pete Alonso, and they’re looking at Baltimore Orioles first baseman Ryan Mountcastle as a potential replacement. According to Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated, the Mets are reportedly exploring a trade for Mountcastle, a move that could fill the right-handed power void left by Alonso.
Mountcastle, 27, enjoyed his best season in 2021 when he hit 33 home runs and drove in 89 RBIs for the Orioles. While his power numbers took a dip last season — he hit 13 home runs with 63 RBIs in 124 games — he posted a career-high .271 batting average, showcasing more consistency and overall offensive improvement.
The Mets are actively preparing for the possibility that Alonso, who has been with the team since 2019, may depart in free agency. Alonso has been reportedly in talks with a prominent American League team, and the Mets are considering various options to replace his significant power bat in their lineup. With two more years of team control remaining on Mountcastle’s contract, he presents a compelling option for New York.
As the Mets continue to navigate their first-base situation, a potential trade for Mountcastle could be one of their most strategic moves to maintain power in the lineup as they plan for life after Alonso.
