BREAKING: Yankees Aaron Boone Confirm The Signing of Two Top Notable Players In Free Agency

The New York Yankees have already added a former Red Sox player this offseason, but it seems they might not be finished tapping into that trend.

According to Mark W. Sanchez of the New York Post, the Yankees have shown interest in both Kiké Hernández and Yoán Moncada. Hernández, now 33 with two World Series rings, recently helped the Dodgers beat the Yankees in the 2024 World Series. Moncada, on the other hand, received a $5 million buyout from the White Sox after they opted not to pick up his 2025 contract option in November.

General manager Brian Cashman has already made some key moves, including signing starting pitcher Max Fried to an eight-year, $218 million deal and bringing first baseman Paul Goldschmidt on board with a one-year, $12.5 million contract. While their moves don’t match the high-profile spending of the Dodgers, Cashman has shown he’s committed to keeping the Yankees competitive next season.

Even with the new season approaching, Cashman and the Yankees are still looking to make moves.

Hernández, who endured boos from Yankees fans last October, was previously linked to New York last offseason. The Yankees were among the top contenders to sign him, but he ultimately chose to return to the Dodgers on a one-year, $4 million deal. Now, with the Dodgers nearly clearing out the open market, Hernández is available for any team, giving the Yankees a stronger chance this time.

The versatile veteran played 126 games in 2024, slashing .229/.281/.373 with 12 home runs and 42 RBIs, primarily at third base, but also appearing at multiple other positions.

Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman spoke about Hernández’s availability, which doesn’t necessarily signal good news for the Yankees’ hopes.

“The door will never be closed on Kiké,” Friedman stated at the Dodgers’ Fan Fest.

As for Moncada, after being part of the White Sox’s disastrous 121-loss season, he hasn’t garnered much interest. He only played 12 games in 2024 due to a left adductor strain, leading the White Sox to decline his $25 million option for 2025.

In 2023, Moncada had a breakout season with a career-best .315 batting average and 25 home runs, earning a spot in the AL MVP voting. However, his performance has since declined, and he hasn’t hit double-digit home runs in the last five years.

Moncada could be a low-risk, high-reward signing for the Yankees. His value is at a low point, and he might be open to a one-year deal to rebuild his value before hitting free agency again.

Though it’s been seven years since Moncada last played third base, if the Yankees want him for infield depth, second base is the most likely position for him.
