The dynamic wide receiver for the South Carolina Gamecock, has been traded to the Washington Commanders in exchange for a fifth-round NFL draft pick.
However, the trade will not be finalized until the official start of the new league year on March 12. This move comes after Samuel requested a trade following the 2024 season, a request that was confirmed last week.
Throughout his six seasons with the 49ers, Samuel established himself as one of the most versatile and exciting players in the league. He played 81 regular-season games, recording 334 receptions for 4,792 yards and 22 touchdowns.
In the 2024 season alone, he posted 51 receptions for 670 yards and three touchdowns, while also contributing 42 rushes for 136 yards and one touchdown. His ability to impact the game both in the air and on the ground has made him a key player for San Francisco’s offense.
“It was a hard conversation to have with Kyle [Shanahan] because of the relationship that we have,” Samuel said earlier this month in an interview with ESPN. “But I have to do what’s best.
I’m more than thankful for the Niners giving me the opportunity of a lifetime, but now I think it’s best that we find another team.” Samuel’s decision to leave the 49ers marks the end of a significant chapter in his career, but one that reflects his desire for a fresh start and new challenges.
Before making his mark in the NFL, Samuel was a standout at the University of South Carolina, where he was one of the most talented wide receivers to ever play for the Gamecocks.

Over the course of his college career, he finished with 148 receptions for 2,076 yards and 28 total touchdowns. His impressive record included 16 receiving touchdowns, seven rushing touchdowns, four kickoff returns, and even a touchdown pass that he threw himself.
As Samuel transitions to the Washington Commanders, he hopes to continue his journey as one of the league’s most versatile players.
His ability to line up in multiple positions and contribute both in the air and on the ground gives the Commanders a unique weapon on offense. With a fresh start in Washington, Samuel will look to build on his impressive NFL career and bring his playmaking abilities to his new team.
