Bold Move: Giants Offer Three First-Round Picks For Quarterback In Controversial Trade

The New York Giants have finally made a move at quarterback by signing Jameis Winston to a two-year contract. While not a long-term solution, it gives head coach Brian Daboll a veteran option as the front office decides how to handle the No. 3 overall pick.

With potential draft picks like Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders still available, the Giants are in a good position to select their future quarterback.

This is the current reality for most Giants fans—it’s not perfect, but it’s manageable. Then, Craig Carton sparked a frenzy with a trade proposal that left everyone shocked.

“Here’s a trade nobody says no to – the [Giants] trade 3 first-round picks (including a pick swap this year) with the [49ers] for Brock Purdy,” Carton tweeted. “The Niners then sign Aaron Rodgers to be their starting QB for the 2025 season – you’re welcome, no need to pat me on the back, just happy to help.”

Carton’s post quickly went viral, igniting debates from both sides on social media.

Brock Purdy to the Giants—A Social Media Sensation

Let’s start with the basics: Purdy has been a reliable quarterback. He’s efficient, rarely turns the ball over, and has led the 49ers to a Super Bowl and an NFC Championship Game appearance. He’d undoubtedly be the best quarterback the Giants have had since Eli Manning. But context is key.

Purdy benefits from a strong offensive line, Christian McCaffrey in the backfield, and weapons like George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk, and Deebo Samuel in Kyle Shanahan’s offense—an ideal setup for any young quarterback.

The Giants don’t have those advantages. They’re working with a rookie wide receiver in Malik Nabers, an offensive line still finding its footing, and a coaching staff under pressure to win now. Expecting Purdy to replicate his 49ers success in this environment would be overly optimistic.

Then, there’s the price tag. Giving up three first-round picks is the kind of move you make for a top-tier quarterback or a game-changing player. While Purdy is talented, he doesn’t yet belong in that elite category. On top of that, he’s about to get paid. Spotrac projects his next deal to be worth around $60 million per year over four years, adding up to a hefty $240 million commitment. Ouch.

Additionally, why would the 49ers even consider trading Purdy? He may not elevate his teammates, but he wins games, and that’s a rare and valuable trait. However, Purdy’s success has largely come in a perfectly designed system, and moving him to the Giants, with their current setup, may not yield the same results.

Giants general manager Joe Schoen is in a win-now situation, which is likely what inspired Carton’s trade suggestion. The move would be a desperate attempt to secure a quarterback who, though unproven, could help save Schoen’s job in the short term. It would be a risky gamble that sacrifices the future.

Purdy has certainly produced, throwing for over 4,200 yards in 2023 and nearly 3,900 yards in 2024. He’s accurate, experienced in big games, and only 25 years old. With the right system and weapons around him, there’s a chance he could develop into the long-term answer the Giants have been searching for. But parting with three first-round picks for a player who’s largely thrived in an ideal offense, and who’s about to get very expensive, feels like overreaching.

Fortunately, the Giants hold the No. 3 pick in this year’s draft, which gives them the opportunity to find their future quarterback without making such a costly trade. Here’s hoping they make the right choice.

So, who would say no to the Purdy-to-Giants trade? It could be both sides.
