SAD NEWS: Braves Make Unexpected Move, Sidelines Several Star Players Due To Injuries Ahead Of Opening Day

Demetrius Bell, an Atlanta-based writer passionate about baseball and a long-time follower of the Atlanta Braves, shares his work here and on SB Nation.

With Opening Day just two days away, the Atlanta Braves made some moves involving players on the injured list (IL). While none of these changes are particularly surprising, it’s still worth noting them to get a sense of who will be available, who won’t, and when we might expect certain players back.

Ronald Acuña Jr and Nacho Alvarez Jr

The Braves tweeted about the moves, explaining that Ronald Acuña Jr. is on the 10-day IL, even though he’s likely to return soon after Spencer Strider, due to the rule that pitchers (and two-way players) must go on the 15-day IL, while everyone else is eligible for the 10-day IL. This doesn’t mean Acuña will return earlier than Strider, but both players will have enough time to prepare before coming back.

Sean Murphy and Joe Jiménez

Nacho Alvarez Jr. has been struggling with an injury since late February and still requires more time to heal. He’s likely to start the season in Triple-A. Sean Murphy has been cleared to resume baseball activities, but he’ll need a few more weeks before he’s fully ready. As for Joe Jiménez, his recovery from major knee surgery will likely keep him out for most, if not all, of the 2025 season. He will start on the 15-day IL, and the Braves will move him to the 60-day IL when they need to free up a roster spot. This is also the first time he’s been placed on the IL since his surgery.

In summary, the Braves have made some expected roster moves, and as Opening Day nears, the roster picture is becoming clearer.
