Pablo Reyes’ Time with the New York Yankees Could Be Coming to an End
The New York Yankees are currently a team full of talent, but that doesn’t mean they won’t be looking to make some strategic moves before the trade deadline.
The Yankees could be in the market for a starting pitcher and a third baseman, two key positions they might look to improve via trades. However, such acquisitions would likely require the Yankees to part ways with some players currently on their active roster. One player whose future with the team is in question is 31-year-old infielder Pablo Reyes.
Reyes has had a tough road to stay in the major leagues. Despite being a backup infielder for the Yankees, his spot on the team has been far from secure. FanSided’s Rucker Haringey recently predicted that the Yankees could cut ties with Reyes before the season concludes.
Reyes made the Yankees’ Opening Day roster based on his solid spring performance, which gave him an opportunity to prove himself in the majors. However, his career history suggests that he may not have a long-term place on the team.

“Reyes deserves credit for making the team as a backup infielder after a strong spring performance,” Haringey wrote. “But there’s a reason why Reyes has bounced around the majors with several different teams over the years.”
Reyes has played for multiple organizations, and his inconsistency has raised doubts about his ability to make an impact on a team like the Yankees. Over his career, Reyes has posted a modest .248 batting average, and he has struggled to distinguish himself as a difference-maker off the bench.
While Reyes has had his moments, he is not the type of player the Yankees typically want to rely on, especially as they look ahead to the postseason. “He’s a 31-year-old fringe Major Leaguer,” Haringey explained, “and he is not the sort of difference-maker a team like the Yankees would like to bring off the bench.”
The Yankees are aiming for deeper postseason success and are likely to want a bench player with a higher ceiling, someone who can contribute significantly in crucial moments. As the season progresses, the Yankees may look to make a move to strengthen their roster in this area.
For Reyes, the next few months will be crucial in determining whether he can remain with the Yankees. If he performs well, particularly by hitting consistently and playing solid defense, the Yankees might be able to trade him before the deadline. This would likely happen when top prospect Jorbit Vivas is deemed ready for the majors, which could provide the Yankees with a reason to move on from Reyes in favor of a younger, more promising option. Reyes could find himself traded to another team in need of a versatile infielder.
However, if Reyes fails to deliver on the field, his time with the Yankees could come to an end much sooner. If his performance doesn’t improve, the Yankees would likely part ways with him, either by cutting him from the roster or releasing him outright within the next couple of months. The Yankees’ roster decisions will be driven by a need to make room for players with higher potential as they gear up for the postseason, and Reyes will need to prove he has what it takes to stick around. Whether he is traded or released, it appears the veteran infielder faces a steep challenge to remain part of the team this season.
