The Las Vegas Raiders have a recurring issue of releasing solid players, only for them to find success with other teams. While many franchises part ways with good players due to a surplus of talent or financial constraints, the Raiders’ tendency to let players go often appears to stem from poor judgment. This has been a trend for several years, and it has led to the team missing out on players who later thrive elsewhere, highlighting a critical flaw in the team’s decision-making.
In 2023, the Raiders signed wide receiver and return specialist DeAndre Carter to a one-year contract. Despite a respectable performance, including his role as the team’s kick and punt returner, Las Vegas chose to let him walk in free agency. Carter, who had contributed 494 return yards in addition to his four receptions for 39 yards, was allowed to leave the Raiders for the Chicago Bears. His departure seemed like just another example of the Raiders letting a solid player slip away.

However, on Tuesday, the Cleveland Browns announced that they had signed Carter to a one-year deal for the 2024 season. Carter, who has spent seven years in the NFL and played for seven different franchises, will join the Browns for his eighth team. While his role with the Raiders was limited, Carter’s contributions in the return game were undeniable, and he’s poised for an even bigger role with Cleveland, particularly in their weak wide receiver corps.
Carter’s potential for increased production is especially evident considering the current state of Cleveland’s wide receiver group. With limited options at receiver, the Browns could rely on Carter for more targets and opportunities in the passing game. After a solid year with the Bears in 2024, where he posted 72 receiving yards and 637 return yards, Carter’s experience and versatility should be a valuable asset for the Browns as they look to improve their offense.
For the Raiders, Carter’s departure represents yet another missed opportunity. With no real presence in the return game and a need for more speed at wide receiver, the team could have used a player like Carter in 2024. Although he wasn’t the Raiders’ star performer last season, his ability to contribute in multiple areas could have provided much-needed depth and spark for the team. Instead, Las Vegas continues to search for the right pieces, while players like Carter find success elsewhere.
