BREAKING: Giants Miss Out On Golden Opportunity As Player Rejects New York For Another Team

The New York Giants “expressed interest” in a trade before the New England Patriots struck a deal with the Dallas Cowboys, according to FOX Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

Schultz reported on April 3 that since the player became available at the start of the offseason, several teams including the Las Vegas Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles, Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Cowboys showed interest.

The insider added that the Patriots had a stronger offer but chose to respect the player’s wishes and sent him to the Cowboys instead.

It’s likely the Giants weren’t the team that made the best offer, especially after securing veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. However, they may have considered making a move earlier in the offseason but decided the price was too high. It’s also possible the player simply didn’t want to join the Giants, despite possibly having a better chance to start there than with the Cowboys.

Patriots Trade for Player to Cowboys for 2-Round Pick Swap

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport initially reported that the trade involved “late-round draft pick compensation.” Later, Rapoport clarified that it was a 5th-round pick for the player and a 7th-round pick, meaning a two-round pick swap.

This return is much lower than what New England reportedly sought earlier this offseason. On March 16, Cleveland Browns insider Tony Grossi mentioned the Patriots were asking for a third-round pick in exchange for the player.

The Giants, with their considerable draft capital, could have made a stronger offer, but it appears they ultimately decided against pursuing the trade.

Why the Player Chose Dallas Over Other Teams

Mass Live reporter Mark Daniels revealed on April 2 that the player wanted to join a roster where he had a chance to compete for the starting role. Despite this, he ultimately chose to back up Dak Prescott, one of the NFL’s highest-paid quarterbacks.

In an exclusive statement to Schultz, the player explained, “My family grew up a Cowboys fan. My mom always had a Cowboys shirt on. She always talked about them. Living in Texas has been a longtime dream of mine. And now I’m with them. I’m ready to work.”

Given the lack of starting roles available at this point in the offseason, the player likely saw the backup job as the best option. With Prescott’s injury history, there’s a possibility he could see playing time before his rookie contract ends, providing him a chance to prove himself for future free agency.
