The University of North Carolina (UNC) men’s basketball program has bolstered its roster with the addition of 6-foot-6 guard Jonathan Powell, who transferred from West Virginia University.

Powell announced his commitment to the Tar Heels on April 1, 2025, following a virtual meeting with head coach Hubert Davis and the coaching staff earlier that day.

During his freshman season with the Mountaineers, Powell started 23 of 32 games, averaging 8.3 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.

Notably, he ranked second among Big 12 freshmen in three-pointers made, with 62, shooting 35.2% from beyond the arc.

Powell’s recruitment progressed rapidly. After entering the transfer portal on March 17, he engaged with several programs, including Ohio State and Ole Miss.

However, his decision to join UNC came swiftly after the Zoom call with the Tar Heels’ staff, without an in-person visit to Chapel Hill.

Powell’s versatility and shooting prowess are expected to significantly enhance UNC’s backcourt.

His ability to stretch the floor and contribute defensively aligns with Coach Davis’s vision for a taller, more dynamic team.

With three years of eligibility remaining, Powell has the potential to develop into a key player for the Tar Heels.

This commitment marks UNC’s first acquisition from the transfer portal this offseason, signaling the beginning of efforts to strengthen the roster for the upcoming 2025-26 season.

Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how Powell’s addition will impact the team’s performance and chemistry.
