It’s the end of an era for Duke Women’s Basketball, as veteran guard Vanessa de Jesus has officially announced her departure from the program. While college sports have undergone tremendous changes in recent years, this one still stings for Blue Devils fans and coaches alike. De Jesus has been a staple of the team for five seasons, including a redshirt year due to a knee injury, and her presence on and off the court has left a lasting mark on the program.
More than just a veteran player, de Jesus holds a special place in head coach Kara Lawson’s heart. As one of Lawson’s first recruits, she helped lay the foundation for a new era of Duke Basketball. Her leadership, selflessness, and commitment to the team made her a cornerstone of the culture Lawson has worked to build over the years.
“She’s truly a special player, and I’ll always remember that,” Lawson said. “When you’re a new coach, you need players who believe in your vision before there’s any proof it works. I could coach another 20 years and never coach another player quite like her. Her team-first mentality, relentless work ethic, and ability to lift up everyone around her are incredibly rare.”

De Jesus wasn’t just a standout for her stats—she was the heart of the locker room, a steady presence in high-pressure moments, and a mentor to younger teammates. Her absence will be deeply felt, not only in game play but in the daily rhythm of practice and team life. She embodied what it meant to be a Duke athlete, setting a standard for those who follow.
As the program looks ahead to the future, there’s no doubt Vanessa de Jesus’ legacy will continue to inspire. Her departure marks the close of a meaningful chapter in Duke Basketball history—but her influence, according to Lawson and those around her, will be felt for many seasons to come.
