BREAKING: Yankees Acquire $56 Million Cy Young Winner in Blockbuster Trade, Sending Spencer Jones as Replacement

Earlier this week, I proposed four different trade packages that the New York Yankees could consider to strengthen their position at the top of the competitive American League East.

The most significant deal in the group involved a blockbuster move to acquire 2022 National League Cy Young winner, Sandy Alcántara, from the Miami Marlins. Here’s how that trade would look:

Yankees receive: RHP Sandy Alcántara
Marlins receive: OF Spencer Jones, RHP Ben Hess, SS/2B Roderick Arias, LHP Brock Selvidge

While it’s possible the Yankees might hesitate to part with the necessary prospects for an ace like Alcántara, if they are open to the idea, this trade package is one that could make it happen. The centerpiece of the deal is the highly regarded prospect, Spencer Jones.

However, Jones is currently blocked in New York by players such as Cody Bellinger, Jasson Dominguez, and Aaron Judge, so his chances of getting a shot in the majors are slim unless there’s an injury. Even then, the Yankees might lean toward using Trent Grisham instead. New York also has other prospects, like Everson Pereira, who are also waiting for their big-league opportunity.

Meanwhile, Roderick Arias faces competition for playing time from infielders like Anthony Volpe, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Jorbit Vivas.

Ben Hess faces an uphill battle to make an impact within an organization that typically focuses on acquiring established pitchers rather than developing them, and Brock Selvidge, though promising, has a lower ceiling.

Ultimately, the Yankees would likely prefer to have Alcántara in their rotation for the next few seasons over keeping this group of prospects. Pairing him with Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Carlos Rodon, and Luis Gil could give the Yankees one of the strongest rotations in all of baseball.
