After the dust settled from the Braves’ offseason moves, the most notable acquisition appeared to be Jurickson Profar. Fresh off a strong 2024 campaign, Profar seemed like the answer to Atlanta’s pressing need in the outfield. However, the front office added a layer of insurance by unexpectedly bringing in Alex Verdugo on a minor league deal.
Despite his recognizable name, Verdugo surprisingly remained unsigned longer than expected. Though he struggled offensively last season, his defense remained above average, and his overall track record at the plate made the Braves’ low-risk signing a quiet but potentially valuable move—one that few saw coming.
Fast-forward to now: with Profar suspended for PED use and the rest of Atlanta’s outfield underperforming, Verdugo’s signing could turn out to be a turning point in the Braves’ 2025 season.

Reports over the weekend suggested that Verdugo could be called up to the majors imminently. With outfielders like Jarred Kelenic and Bryan De La Cruz struggling, it seems like a logical move. Braves insider Mark Bowman even hinted on Monday that Verdugo could join the team for the start of their series against the Blue Jays.
While expecting Verdugo to perform at an All-Star level may be unrealistic, the Braves don’t need him to be a superstar. If he can hit around .270, provide occasional power, and continue playing strong defense, he could be a significant improvement over the current options. Even moderate contributions could help extend rallies that have been falling short all season.
As for what the Braves will do with Kelenic and De La Cruz later on—that’s a question for another time. For now, with the offense sputtering and key stars like Spencer Strider and Ronald Acuña Jr. still working their way back, Verdugo’s solid performance in the minors offers a glimmer of hope for a much-needed offensive spark.
