Breaking: Braves Land Shocking Nacho Alvarez Jr. Replacement

Earlier this week, I proposed a potential trade that would send Cincinnati Reds pitcher Nick Martinez to the Atlanta Braves in exchange for a package of prospects. Atlanta is in need of starting pitching help, and Martinez could be a solid option for them. Here’s how the deal would look:

Braves receive: RHP Nick Martinez
Reds receive: INF Nacho Alvarez Jr., RHP JR Ritchie

The Reds surprisingly have an abundance of starting pitchers, a stark contrast to last season when injuries plagued their rotation. Their current staff features Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo, and Brady Singer at the top, followed by Andrew Abbott and Martinez. Additionally, top prospect Rhett Lowder is on the mend, while Chase Petty and Chase Burns are nearing MLB readiness.

Given their depth and Martinez’s expiring contract, he’s the most likely trade candidate. For Atlanta, acquiring a reliable veteran like Martinez would help stabilize a rotation that’s struggled with inconsistency. Despite Spencer Strider’s imminent return, the Braves are relying on arms like Grant Holmes and Bryce Elder—options that could jeopardize their season before it truly begins.

In return, the Reds would get infielder Nacho Alvarez Jr., a promising prospect who could eventually fill a role at third base, and right-hander JR Ritchie, a young pitcher with an already impressive skill set.
