Another player from West Virginia’s 2025 signing class will not be joining the team in Morgantown. Defensive lineman Evan Powell has been granted a release from his National Letter of Intent and officially announced his commitment to East Carolina on Tuesday.
As a senior at Huntingtown High School in Maryland, Powell totaled 50 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, 12 sacks, five QB hurries, and four passes defended.
West Virginia was his only Power Five offer, and he initially chose the Mountaineers over offers from Army, Buffalo, Delaware State, East Carolina, James Madison, Kent State, Marshall, Memphis, Navy, Old Dominion, Temple, and Toledo.
Powell is the third signee in WVU’s 2025 class to switch schools. The other two are wide receiver Jalil Hall, who committed to Purdue, and offensive lineman Eidan Buchanan, who signed with North Carolina.

Evaluation from signing day: Powell is highly active on the field, making an impact on nearly every play he’s involved in. Whether he’s recording a sack or tackle for loss, pressuring the quarterback, getting his hands in passing lanes, or forcing the QB out of a comfortable pocket, he consistently causes disruption.
It’s believed that Powell has the potential to transition to a Bandit position as a stand-up edge rusher. Right now, he primarily relies on his speed and athleticism to make plays against the quarterback.
