Nolan Arenado was a major storyline during the offseason, with reports suggesting the St. Louis Cardinals were actively exploring trade options for him throughout the winter.
Moving Arenado presents challenges due to his sizable contract and a no-trade clause, which he reportedly agreed to waive for only six teams: the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Angels, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, and Philadelphia Phillies.
So far, none of those teams have made a strong push, but that could change.
According to ESPN’s David Schoenfield, the Cardinals may still look to deal Arenado in a major midseason trade. “His future with the team remains uncertain after offseason trade attempts,” Schoenfield noted.
Arenado’s hefty salary — $32 million this year, $27 million in 2026, and $15 million in 2027 — complicates potential deals.

However, his impressive early-season performance, which includes more walks than strikeouts and solid hitting, could spark renewed interest. Several teams could benefit from an upgrade at third base.
The Angels, exceeding expectations so far, might consider making a move. The Padres and Dodgers are grappling with infield injuries and underwhelming performances, while the Phillies are facing issues with Alec Bohm at third.
There’s also the possibility that Arenado could expand his trade options by waiving his no-trade clause for other contenders like the Blue Jays, Yankees, or Astros.
