BREAKING: Reds Head Coach Confirms Rece Hinds as New Team Captain — Reason Behind the Decision Revealed

The Cincinnati Reds are currently two games below the .500 mark, largely due to an inconsistent offense. The team’s batting average stands at .242—just slightly above the league average—and their OPS+ of 95 places them near the bottom in that category. Offensively, they rank fifth in total runs scored (123), 11th in home runs (27), 12th in hits (194), and 10th in overall OPS (.716), making their lineup average overall, especially when it comes to producing in tight games. That’s where Reece Hinds could provide a much-needed boost.

Drafted in the second round of the 2019 MLB Draft out of IMG Academy, Hinds was known for his impressive power, which was a key reason the Reds took a chance on him. He hasn’t disappointed in that department—Hinds has hit 65 home runs in the minors, including 22 homers and 98 RBIs during a standout 2023 season with the Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts. However, his aggressive approach has led to a high strikeout rate, with a 38% whiff rate in Triple-A during 2024.

Despite that, Hinds showed promise during a short stint with the Reds last season, posting a .261 average, five home runs, 11 RBIs, and a .717 slugging percentage over just 51 at-bats. This year with Triple-A Louisville, he’s hitting .238 but leads the team in RBIs (19) and stolen bases (10), while tying for the team lead in home runs (4). He also boasts a .319 BABIP and has eight extra-base hits in 80 at-bats.

Beyond his bat, Hinds contributes defensively with standout metrics in the outfield. He holds a 2.2 range rating and an ultimate zone rating of 11.3 per 150 games, highlighting his ability to make game-changing plays in the field.

With the Reds’ offense struggling to find consistency, Hinds could be the energizing presence the lineup needs, offering a blend of raw power and athleticism that could make a significant impact.
