Major Breaking: Cubs Acquire Cardinals’ $275 Million Star as Replacement for Matt Shaw

What’s next for the Chicago Cubs at third base following the demotion of Matt Shaw? Although Shaw is considered one of MLB’s premier prospects and is expected to return before long, the Cubs must manage his development carefully to avoid hurting his confidence.

While sending him to Triple-A could be tough on him mentally, it may ultimately prove beneficial if he rebounds and improves.

Given their hot 15-10 start and position atop the NL Central, the Cubs may decide they can’t afford to wait and opt to make a trade instead.

ESPN’s David Schoenfield suggested they consider acquiring Nolan Arenado from the St. Louis Cardinals—widely viewed as the top third baseman likely to be available this summer.

Schoenfield pointed out that several contenders, including the Phillies, Blue Jays, Yankees, and Cubs, are struggling at third base. If St. Louis is willing to eat some of Arenado’s contract, a deal could be on the table.

Though Arenado had a down year last season, he’s started 2025 strong, slashing a 135 OPS+ with two home runs in 91 plate appearances.

His power numbers aren’t what they once were—he’s had three seasons with over 40 home runs—but he’s still a highly productive hitter who could immediately strengthen the Cubs’ offense.
