Cubs Loss: Chicago White Sox Make Bold Move, Acquiring Veteran Player from Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cubs and Chicago White Sox finalized a trade on Saturday, as announced by the White Sox.

“Before today’s game against the Athletics, the Chicago White Sox acquired infielder Gage Workman from the Cubs in exchange for cash considerations and designated infielder Nick Maton for assignment,” the White Sox shared on X (formerly Twitter).

The White Sox, who have faced challenges during the 2025 season, made this move while the Cubs are performing well. The addition of Workman could help strengthen the Sox’s roster.

Workman, 25, has played in just nine MLB games, recording a line of .214/.267/.286/.552 in 15 plate appearances. Known for his versatility, he can play multiple infield positions, and the White Sox hope he can make a positive impact.

Previously part of the Detroit Tigers organization, Workman was selected by the Cubs in the Rule 5 Draft this past offseason. After making his MLB debut and playing nine games in 2025, the Cubs designated him for assignment on Wednesday, leading to the trade with the White Sox. Chicago appears to have some interest in the young infielder.

It remains unclear what his role with the White Sox will be, but given their rebuilding phase, Workman could get an opportunity in the majors soon as the team seeks to make significant improvements.

The White Sox are set to play the Athletics in Sacramento on Saturday at 4:05 PM EST, hoping to improve their 6-20 record, which places them last in the American League Central. Meanwhile, the Cubs, sitting atop the National League Central with a 17-10 record, will face the Philadelphia Phillies at 4:05 PM EST.
