The Big Ten Conference has confirmed that the Weber State player who tackled Washington Huskies tight end Quentin Moore, resulting in an injury, was ineligible because he entered the field from the sidelines during the play.
According to a conference spokesperson, during the game on Saturday with 8:03 left in the second quarter, a Weber State defender came onto the field after the ball was snapped and made the tackle after a 14-yard gain.
At the time, Weber State had only 10 players on the field. Linebacker Garrett Beck entered the field from the sidelines while the play was active. Beck tackled Moore, who was injured as a result.
The game was officiated by a Big Ten crew. The conference stated that even if the officials had noticed Beck’s illegal entry, the play would not have been halted. Instead, Weber State should have been penalized with a five-yard penalty from the previous spot after the play, as per Rule 3, Section 5, Article 2.a.
