Major Breaking: Vikings Land $34 Mill Deal

Sam Darnold is performing like an MVP candidate, leading the NFL in touchdown passes after three weeks and helping the Minnesota Vikings achieve their first 3-0 start in eight years. However, the Vikings need to improve their protection for him.

After allowing only one sack in Week 1, Darnold has been sacked three or more times in the last two games. While they’ve managed to overcome these challenges, Bleacher Report’s NFL Scouting Department advises addressing the ongoing issues with the offensive line, particularly with Ed Ingram’s struggles. They suggested that bringing in a veteran guard like Mark Glowinski could be beneficial, especially with Dalton Risner potentially returning from injured reserve.

Glowinski, a 32-year-old former fourth-round pick by the Seahawks, has played for the Colts and Giants. He has started six of his 13 games in 2023 but boasts a career total of 96 starts out of 124 games. Although Pro Football Focus gave him a 63.3 grade for the year—the lowest since 2019—he would still represent an upgrade for the Vikings.

Ingram’s inconsistent play has drawn attention, as ESPN’s Kevin Siefert noted he’s been the Vikings’ “biggest issue.” Despite the team’s strong offensive performance, Ingram ranks low in both pass and run blocking among guards.

Ingram, a second-round pick in 2021, has started all but two games in his career but has never achieved a PFF grade higher than 59.5. His current contract is manageable, making a roster change possible.

Dalton Risner, who could be activated from injured reserve soon, might be a candidate to replace Ingram. Signed for one year in May, he is recovering from a back injury and is expected to return in Week 5. However, his history suggests he may not significantly outperform Ingram, as he has primarily played left guard throughout his career and received a 57.0 grade in 2023, the lowest of his career.
