Atlanta Braves slugger Austin Riley is officially sidelined for the remainder of the 2024 season as his fractured right hand remains unhealed. A recent CT scan has revealed that his recovery will not be swift enough for him to return in time for the postseason. The Braves currently find themselves one game out of a Wild Card spot in the National League.
Riley sustained the injury on August 18th when he was hit by a pitch from Los Angeles Angels pitcher Jack Kochanowicz. The healing process is expected to be slow, and his cast will remain on for the time being, effectively ending his hopes of returning this season. The fracture is located at the base of his hamate bone.
This year, the 27-year-old has recorded a 2.8 WAR, a .256 batting average, 19 home runs, and 56 RBIs. He also missed time earlier in the season due to an oblique injury in May. Should the Braves make a postseason push, they will be without Riley’s significant power-hitting capabilities, as well as his impressive defensive skills at third base. One standout defensive play occurred just days before his injury on August 16th.
Known for his sharp baseball instincts and strong arm, Riley is one of several key players currently injured for the Braves, joining teammates Spencer Strider, Ronald Acuña Jr., Reynaldo Lopez, and A.J. Minter on the sidelines.
As the postseason approaches, injuries continue to challenge teams across the league. In addition to his two All-Star selections and Silver Slugger Awards, Riley received the Heart and Hustle Award in 2023, recognizing his passion for the game.
