BREAKING NEWS: Crimson Tide Starter Makes Shock Transfer After Injury Struggles

A former starter for the Alabama Crimson Tide has announced plans to redshirt this season and enter the transfer portal after the team’s first five games. Junior defensive lineman Jehiem Oatis communicated his decision to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, citing concerns about playing time.

This was later confirmed by defensive coordinator Kane Wommack during a press conference on Monday morning.

Wommack noted that Oatis has faced ongoing injury struggles, which have hindered his ability to contribute effectively on the field. He emphasized that his primary focus remains on the players who are committed to helping the team succeed.

Wommack expressed understanding of Oatis’s situation while maintaining a commitment to the team’s goals.

According to NCAA regulations, a player can redshirt if he has participated in no more than four games during a season. Oatis, who had an impressive start to his career with ten games as a freshman in 2022, has struggled this season, appearing in only three games due to injuries and managing just two tackles.

He did not play in the fifth game against Vanderbilt, allowing him to redshirt.

Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer indicated that Oatis’s decision had been anticipated given the circumstances. He acknowledged the complexities surrounding the player’s health and personal situation, highlighting the hard work and dedication that Oatis has demonstrated. DeBoer reiterated that the program’s focus is on players who can contribute to winning.

Later that evening, Oatis took to Instagram to express his feelings about the decision. He addressed the University of Alabama community, stating that while it was a difficult choice, he needed to prioritize his future.

He conveyed gratitude for the experiences he has had and expressed optimism about finding a new team where he can showcase his abilities and contribute to their success. Oatis also requested that all inquiries be directed through his representatives, emphasizing the need for respect regarding his decision.
