The Los Angeles Dodgers triumphed over the New York Yankees 4-2, taking a 2-0 lead in the World Series, but faced a setback with an injury to star player Shohei Ohtani.
The Dodgers secured their second victory over the weekend at home before heading to New York, while the Yankees struggled to score more than a single run, even with the bases loaded in the ninth inning.
Ohtani, a frontrunner for the National League MVP after hitting 54 home runs in his first season with the Dodgers following his move from the Los Angeles Angels, exited the game after injuring his left arm while sliding into second base in the seventh inning. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts indicated that Ohtani had partially dislocated his left shoulder.
Freddie Freeman continued his strong performance, hitting a home run for the second consecutive night, following his historic walk-off grand slam that ended game one. He has now homered in four straight World Series games, dating back to the last two of Atlanta’s championship series against Houston in 2021.
Tommy Edman and Teoscar Hernandez also contributed home runs, giving the Dodgers a 4-1 lead in the third inning, with Juan Soto hitting a solo homer in response. Soto’s homer was the only hit allowed by Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto until the Yankees’ ninth-inning rally.
Soto’s homer cut the deficit before Giancarlo Stanton added another hit off the third base bag. Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled and Anthony Rizzo was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with one out, but the Yankees couldn’t capitalize to bring in any more runs.
The best-of-seven series will continue at Yankee Stadium with game three on Monday night.
