MAJOR SETBACK: Tigers trade Another Elite Player to Phillies for cash considerations

The Detroit Tigers traded right-handed reliever Devin Sweet to the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday in exchange for cash considerations.

Sweet, 28, was about to become a minor league free agent, but the Phillies quickly added him to their 40-man roster to prevent him from hitting the open market.

Originally signed by the Seattle Mariners as an undrafted free agent in 2018, Sweet made his MLB debut with Seattle in 2023. However, he was designated for assignment on August 31.

The Oakland Athletics claimed him off waivers and he appeared in five games for them late in the season. In December, the A’s waived him, and he was claimed by the San Francisco Giants.

Sweet’s journey then took him to the Tigers, who claimed him from the Giants on January 18, but he was DFA’d 11 days later. He cleared waivers this time and remained within the Tigers organization.
