Ablo Reyes spent the past few seasons with the Boston Red Sox. Now, the seasoned utility player has signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox’s biggest rival, the New York Yankees, as reported by Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News.
Reyes’ most recent appearance was with the New York Mets, where he played one game as a pinch-runner on September 1, following his trade from the Red Sox, who sent the 31-year-old Dominican player to the Mets in exchange for cash considerations.
In 22 MLB games last season with the Red Sox and Mets, Reyes posted a .183 batting average, with no home runs, five RBIs, and one stolen base. However, in 68 Triple-A games across both teams, he batted .300, hitting 12 home runs, driving in 42 RBIs, stealing 15 bases, and posting an .889 OPS.
Since making his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2018, Reyes has a career .248 average, with eight home runs, 54 RBIs, 72 runs, and 13 stolen bases. With 233 major league games played, Reyes could potentially earn a spot on the Yankees’ roster next season, especially with key players like first baseman Anthony Rizzo and second baseman Gleyber Torres entering free agency after the World Series.
