HUGE-ADDITION: Eight-time All-Star lands with New York Yankees after Paul Goldschmidt signing

The New York Yankees are moving ahead with their plans after missing out on re-signing Juan Soto, which includes trading for Cody Bellinger. On Saturday, Paul Goldschmidt added to their efforts by signing a one-year, $12.5 million contract. This move could significantly boost the Yankees’ chances of acquiring another high-profile player.

Earlier this offseason, the Yankees attempted to trade for eight-time All-Star Nolan Arenado, but the deal was reportedly rejected when the Yankees insisted on including pitcher Marcus Stroman. However, with the addition of Goldschmidt, the chances of acquiring Arenado through trade may have greatly improved.

Yankees insider Bryan Hoch noted that Goldschmidt’s signing could make an Arenado trade more likely due to the close bond Goldschmidt and Arenado have developed over the past four years with the St. Louis Cardinals. This connection might make Arenado more inclined to waive his no-trade clause in order to play alongside his friend.

At this point, an Arenado trade seems almost inevitable—it’s just a matter of when and who will land him. The team that acquires the ten-time Gold Glove winner will be getting a motivated player eager to bounce back from last season’s OPS+ of 101, the third-lowest of his career.
