The New York Yankees have developed a solid emergency backup plan after missing out on superstar Juan Soto in free agency this offseason. They’ve signed Paul Goldschmidt and Max Fried and made major trades for reliever Devin Williams and outfielder Cody Bellinger.
However, these acquisitions mean the Yankees will have to part ways with some players, and second baseman Gleyber Torres seems to be one of the most likely candidates to leave. With Torres heading to free agency, he’s expected to secure a contract worth between one to three years, with an average annual value of around $10 million.
But as the Yankees focus on strengthening their roster for another championship push, Torres is likely to be playing elsewhere.
Where might Torres end up?
A possible destination for Torres is the Los Angeles Angels, who have already shown their commitment to competing by acquiring starting pitcher Yusei Kikuchi early in the offseason. The Angels are eager to contend and adding a low-risk, high-reward infielder like Torres would be a major boost to their roster.
Torres has posted a 100-plus OPS+ in six of his seven seasons in the majors, and he could be signed for under $15 million per season. For the Angels, signing Torres represents an opportunity to improve their lineup, and if things don’t work out, they could always trade him at the deadline either this year or next. A potential contract could be for two years, valued at around $25 million.
