The New York Yankees made major moves this offseason by adding Devin Williams, Max Fried, Cody Bellinger, and Paul Goldschmidt. However, they now face a gap in the infield following Gleyber Torres’ departure in free agency. One possible solution could be a major trade with the St. Louis Cardinals, bringing Nolan Arenado and Ryan Helsley to New York.
Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter suggested the Yankees might be interested in acquiring both All-Stars as part of a package deal, with Arenado filling the third base void and Helsley bolstering the bullpen. Reuter highlighted that pairing Helsley with Luke Weaver and Williams would form a strong late-inning trio.
Arenado, who is under contract for three more years as part of a $260 million extension he signed with the Rockies in 2019, would address the Yankees’ immediate needs at third base, allowing Jazz Chisholm Jr. to move to second. Helsley, who is set to become a free agent after the season, is projected to earn a six-year, $81 million deal in free agency.
While Helsley would enhance the Yankees’ bullpen, the team could evaluate both him and Williams before deciding on a re-signing. Arenado is a decorated eight-time All-Star, five-time Silver Slugger, and ten-time Gold Glove winner, while Helsley is a two-time All-Star and the 2024 MLB saves leader. Both could play key roles in helping the Yankees make a World Series push.
