BOOST: Mets Confirm Pitcher’s Departure to Giants

The Giants bolstered their pitching depth by reportedly signing a minor-league deal with Joey Lucchesi, a former standout at Newark Memorial High and Chabot College, who has played parts of six seasons in the major leagues.

The 31-year-old left-hander’s contract includes an invitation to spring training and a $1.5 million salary if he earns a spot on the Giants’ major league roster, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.

Lucchesi spent most of the last two seasons with the New York Mets’ Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse, posting a 4.57 ERA over 204.2 innings. Since returning from Tommy John surgery in 2023, he appeared in 11 games for the Mets, recording a 3.32 ERA in 57 innings, including a 0-2 record with a 5.14 ERA in two spot starts last season.

With 394.2 innings pitched in the majors, Lucchesi holds a career record of 23-26 with a 4.10 ERA and 388 strikeouts. Of his 81 MLB appearances, all but four have been as a starter.

The 6-foot-5, 225-pound pitcher could serve as insurance for a Giants rotation that includes aces Logan Webb and Justin Verlander, along with left-handers Robbie Ray and Kyle Harrison, as well as right-hander Jordan Hicks. Lucchesi might also offer a left-handed option for a rotation that could feature righties Hayden Birdsong and Landen Roupp as potential fill-ins.
