While the New York Giants have been connected to selecting a quarterback with their top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, a team insider suggests that a trade for a certain veteran former Pro Bowler “shouldn’t be ruled out.”
Expectations for the Giants were low in 2024, especially after losing star running back Saquon Barkley in free agency. However, finishing with a 3-14 record, among the worst in the league, was the worst-case scenario.
Now, the team faces another offseason of roster rebuilding after another losing season, but they hold a top three pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Many experts predict the Giants will use this pick to select a potential franchise quarterback, with Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders being a popular choice.
However, on Wednesday, ESPN Giants insider Jordan Raanan proposed an unexpected alternative for the team’s starting quarterback in 2025.
Derek Carr’s stats (2024): 2,145 passing yards, 67.7% completion, 15 touchdowns, 5 interceptions, 101.0 passer rating
Could the New York Giants pursue Derek Carr in a trade?
Raanan suggested that the future of Derek Carr with the New Orleans Saints could be uncertain, and that a trade could be a possibility. “Nothing should be ruled out,” he wrote.
After two underwhelming seasons with New Orleans, Carr may be available for trade. As a short-term solution, the Giants could do worse than acquiring him.
Derek Carr contract: Four years, $150 million
Raanan noted that while the Giants were high on Sanders during the season, if they determine that he’s not worth a top-three pick after further evaluation, they might go with the best available player, which could be his teammate, Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.
If Carr stays healthy, a passing attack featuring him, rookie star Malik Nabers, and Hunter would be a significant upgrade over what the Giants had in 2024. With an estimated $53 million in cap space, the team could have the financial flexibility to make a trade easier.
