REPORT: Giants Set to Lose Key Wide Receiver as Free Agency Looms, Chiefs Emerging as Top Destination

The Daniel Jones era may be over, but for the New York Giants, the exit of another key player seems increasingly likely. Wide receiver Darius Slayton, who has been one of Jones’ most reliable targets over the years, is expected to leave the Giants this offseason as the team retools for a new franchise quarterback. While the Giants’ future remains uncertain, Slayton’s future is about to take an exciting turn, with the Kansas City Chiefs reportedly showing strong interest.

Slayton, who was a consistent 700-yard receiver for the Giants in four of his six seasons, is ready for a fresh start. The veteran’s contract talks with the Giants fell flat in 2024, largely due to poor quarterback play that limited his bonus opportunities. As Slayton’s value rises, the open market is ripe for the taking—and all signs point to a change of scenery in his future.

In a bold prediction, CBS Sports has the Chiefs as the frontrunners to sign Slayton in free agency. The Chiefs, fresh off trading Tyreek Hill and needing a deep threat to stretch the field, could find the perfect fit in the veteran wideout. “Slayton needs a change of scenery, and what better offense to join than the one led by Patrick Mahomes?” wrote Jordan Dajani. The Chiefs’ offense could become even more dynamic with a receiving trio of Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Slayton, offering a mix of explosiveness and versatility.

Slayton has proven he can be a game-changer, bursting onto the scene in 2019 with 740 yards and eight touchdowns. In fact, he’s the only wide receiver in Giants history to lead the team in receiving yards in four of his first five seasons—a testament to his ability to perform year in and year out. If he lands in Kansas City, he’ll add the deep-play element that the Chiefs have been missing, pairing perfectly with Mahomes’ strong arm and high-powered offense.

While Slayton’s time in New York is winding down, a move to the Chiefs could open the door to a new chapter of success. His potential departure from the Giants will mark the end of a six-season run, where he finished with 259 catches, 3,897 yards, and 21 touchdowns. If he heads to Kansas City, Slayton could find himself back in the spotlight, contributing to one of the most potent offenses in the league—while chasing another Super Bowl ring.
