BREAKING: Yankees Confirm Blockbuster Signing of Cleveland Key Player

The New York Yankees have officially signed former Cleveland Guardians standout Carlos Carrasco to a minor-league contract. If he makes the roster, Carrasco will earn $1.5 million next season, with the possibility of earning up to $2.5 million in performance bonuses. Carrasco, also known as “Cookie,” debuted with Cleveland in 2009 and was a mainstay in their rotation until his trade to the Mets in 2021. He returned to the Guardians in 2024.

Carrasco was a key part of Cleveland’s rotation from 2014 to 2018, leading the MLB in wins during the 2017 season and delivering an outstanding 2020 campaign. His career took a major turn when he overcame chronic myeloid leukemia, missing three months of the 2019 season. However, since then, his performance has declined, posting a 5.33 ERA over the last four years, plagued by injuries.

In 2024, Carrasco posted a 5.64 ERA over 103.2 innings with 89 strikeouts. His primary pitch, a four-seam fastball averaging 91.6 mph, has been problematic for him in recent years. Along with the four-seamer, he throws a slider, sinker, changeup, curveball, and has been working on a sweeper to complete his six-pitch arsenal.

Looking ahead, Carrasco faces stiff competition for a spot in the Yankees’ rotation, which includes Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Luis Gil, Carlos Rodon, and Clarke Schmidt. The Yankees also have JT Brubaker, who missed last season due to injury, as well as new additions Roansy Contreras and Allan Winans, both of whom have struggled in the majors. Top prospects like Will Warren, Chase Hampton, and Zach Messinger are also waiting for their chance.

Though Carrasco’s chances of securing a starting role are uncertain, his six-pitch repertoire could make him a valuable addition if the Yankees can keep him healthy. With the possibility of Brian Cashman moving Marcus Stroman, Carrasco may find himself in a bullpen role as the team works to keep him in a manageable position.
