Could C.J. Uzomah make a return from injury to play in the Super Bowl again?
On Thursday, the Philadelphia Eagles updated the status of the former Auburn tight end, changing it from reserve/injured to reserve/injured, designated to return.
This adjustment cleared the way for Uzomah to return to practice as the Eagles prepare for their Super Bowl matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs on Feb. 9 at 5:30 p.m. CST at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans.
Uzomah has been on injured reserve since January 1, following an abdominal injury sustained during a 41-7 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 29. He missed the Eagles’ regular-season finale and their three NFC playoff victories.
Players placed on injured reserve must miss at least four games before they are eligible to return.
In the 2021 season, Uzomah suffered a sprained MCL in his left knee during the AFC Championship Game against Kansas City, which the Bengals won 27-24 in overtime.
Just two weeks later, Uzomah played in Super Bowl LVI, contributing 49 offensive snaps and catching two passes for 11 yards in the Bengals’ 23-20 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.
Uzomah set career highs in the 2021 regular season, recording 49 catches for 493 yards and five touchdowns, plus an additional 15 receptions for 146 yards and a touchdown in the postseason.
This season with Philadelphia, Uzomah has yet to record a reception. He has appeared in seven games with three starts, logging 138 offensive snaps and 28 special-teams plays in his 10th NFL season. Uzomah is part of the 40 Auburn alumni who have played in the Super Bowl. Neither the Chiefs nor the Eagles have an active Auburn alumnus on their roster this season.
