East Carolina punter Luke Larsen is preparing for a new chapter in his college football career as he enters the transfer portal this offseason. After spending five years with the Pirates, Larsen has announced his decision to leave the program.
The Australian-born punter, who began playing American football at 28, will finish his MBA at ECU before seeking a new team. His departure is a significant loss for the Pirates, as Larsen ranks fourth in the school’s history with 7,099 yards over 174 punts. Despite his solid career, he is leaving the chance to set a school record to explore other opportunities.
Larsen’s journey to college football was unconventional; he redshirted in 2021 after his first season in 2020, which didn’t count against his eligibility. His academic achievements include a bachelor’s degree in industrial distribution and logistics, and he’s also been a six-time honoree on the ECU Director of Athletics Honor Roll.
At 28, Larsen is the oldest active player in college football, joining a growing list of athletes who’ve taken advantage of extra eligibility due to the NCAA’s relaxed rules. As he closes out his college playing career, Larsen will decide whether to pursue an NFL opportunity or begin his professional career outside of football.
