REPORT: Another Key Man Announces Return To Mizzou Football

In a major boost for Mizzou Football, starting linebacker Triston Newson has confirmed he will return for the upcoming season. Known for his impressive playmaking abilities, Newson is set to continue playing a central role in the Tigers’ defensive lineup.

The announcement comes after Newson, who was granted an additional season of eligibility by the NCAA, had been weighing his options. He had initially been a key player for the Tigers alongside other linebackers like Chuck Hicks and Corey Flagg, and with the addition of new linebackers from the transfer portal — Mikai Gbayor and Josiah Trotter — it’s clear that Mizzou’s linebacker room is stacked for the upcoming season.

This decision also follows the NCAA’s controversial blanket eligibility rule for players who spent time in junior college football, a rule Newson was able to capitalize on, allowing him to return for another season despite initially having exhausted his eligibility.

With a loaded linebacker group and fresh leadership under new Linebackers Coach Derek Nicholson, Newson’s return will be critical in maintaining the team’s defensive strength. In addition to Newson, the Tigers also have a mix of experienced players, including Khalil Jacobs, a South Alabama transfer who was playing a key role before an injury, and a group of promising freshmen.

Coach Eli Drinkwitz is likely to continue the three-man linebacker rotation, which has been effective for Mizzou. Newson’s return gives the Tigers more depth and experience in an already strong defense, giving them even more firepower heading into the next season.

Stay tuned for more updates as Mizzou Football looks to build on their success.
