BREAKING: Houston Texans Land No. 1 overall pick to future contract

The Houston Texans have completed their coaching staff and are now focusing on strengthening their roster. Although their significant moves will come once the new season begins, the team is already making moves by signing players to future/reserve contracts.

While they are not permitted to negotiate with players who were on active rosters at the end of the regular season, the Texans can target players from practice squads.

This past weekend, the Texans made a move by agreeing to terms with Kingsley Jonathan on a Reserve/Future contract.

Jonathan, a standout player for Syracuse, had an impressive college career, recording 102 tackles, 15 sacks, four pass deflections, three forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries over five seasons. He also earned recognition off the field, being a semifinalist for the 2021 Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year Award.

After going undrafted in the NFL following his NCAA career, the 6-foot-4, 260-pound defensive player was selected as the No. 1 pick in the CFL Global Draft by the Montreal Alouettes. However, Jonathan opted not to pursue a CFL career and instead signed with the Buffalo Bills. After being released by Buffalo and playing five games with the Chicago Bears, he was waived and returned to Buffalo, where he spent time on their practice squad.

Making the roster in Houston will be a challenge, particularly if the team re-signs Derek Barnett, who provided excellent depth as a backup to Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter.
