In a move to fill the gap at designated hitter, the New York Yankees have reunited with a familiar face, signing Alex Verdugo to a one-year deal worth $9 million. With Giancarlo Stanton’s return still uncertain, the Yankees have turned to the versatile outfielder and slugger to provide a boost to their lineup.
Verdugo, who had a down year in 2024 with a .233 average, 13 home runs, and 61 RBIs, offers the Yankees both power and experience. Despite a slightly lower batting average, Verdugo tied his career-high in home runs, showcasing his potential to make an impact in the Bronx. The decision to bring him back provides the Yankees with much-needed depth as they await Stanton’s return, giving them a reliable bat in the middle of their order.

The addition of Verdugo also offers flexibility. If the Yankees decide to give Jasson Domínguez a shot at DH, Verdugo can be rotated into left field, strengthening the team’s outfield depth. With a market value of $60 million over four years, the Yankees managed to secure Verdugo for a short-term, one-year deal.
This signing allows the Yankees to plug an immediate hole at DH and provides Verdugo a chance to prove himself ahead of free agency in 2026. Even if Stanton returns soon, Verdugo’s presence adds a solid depth piece to the Yankees’ roster as they prepare for the 2025 season.
