REPORT: Giants Reveal Why They Might Draft a QB in Round 1 and Block the Cowboys’ Plans

The New York Giants currently hold the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and unfortunately for them, there are only two main quarterbacks being discussed as potential top picks. This means that if the Titans and Browns select quarterbacks with their first two picks, the Giants’ best available quarterback would be Jaxson Dart, who isn’t really considered worthy of a high first-round pick.

However, that might not stop them from choosing him, especially with recent developments in the NFC East. With Cooper Rush leaving the division to sign with the Ravens as Lamar Jackson’s backup, the Cowboys now need a new quarterback to back up Dak Prescott. NFL insider Ian Rapoport has suggested that the Cowboys might look to address this need sooner rather than later in this draft.

Rapoport mentioned on NFL Network, “How high do [the Cowboys] go? Because if you wait until the fifth, sixth, or seventh round, you won’t know what kind of backup quarterback you’re getting. And honestly, by then, they could all be gone. To me, this means the Cowboys are likely considering taking a quarterback, if not on Thursday, then maybe on Friday.”

The Giants could potentially take advantage of this situation by selecting a quarterback in the first round. The hope is that the Browns choose another direction with the second pick, leaving Shedeur Sanders available for the Giants at number three. However, if both Cam Ward and Sanders are taken by that time, the Giants might get aggressive and pick Dart earlier than expected, or they could trade down to try to secure him later while adding more draft capital.

With the Cowboys also looking for a quarterback, they’re likely searching not only for a backup for Prescott but also potentially a future replacement. Although Prescott signed a significant contract just six months ago, it’s no guarantee he’ll remain with the team for the duration of the deal (just look at what happened with Russell Wilson and the Broncos last year).

In this scenario, the Giants could not only secure their quarterback of the future but also block the Cowboys from adding one, making it a win-win for New York.
