The New York Yankees kicked off their season with a 4-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, but they did so without Giancarlo Stanton, who is reportedly dealing with elbow injuries. The 35-year-old slugger has struggled with injuries since joining the Yankees. FanSided’s Rucker Haringey predicted that the Yankees might trade Stanton this offseason due to yet another injury setback.
“At some point, the Yankees’ front office is going to grow frustrated with Giancarlo Stanton’s inability to remain healthy for any significant period,” Haringey wrote. “Missing the start of this season due to injuries in both elbows should be the tipping point for Cashman.
The challenge in parting with Stanton lies in his hefty contract, but the amount owed to him drops significantly before the 2026 season. This offseason presents the perfect opportunity to move on from Stanton without having to attach too much prospect capital in a trade.”
Stanton, who signed a 13-year, $325 million extension with the Miami Marlins in 2015 before being traded to the Yankees in 2017, is earning $32 million this season. There is currently no clear timeline for his return, and according to general manager Brian Cashman, it could be an extended absence. However, next season, his salary decreases to $19 million, which could make him more movable.
Since joining the Yankees, Stanton has missed numerous games due to injury, having played over 140 games only once. Despite this, he has still hit 162 home runs for the Yankees in the regular season and currently holds 429 career home runs, making him the active leader in the category. Though he’s still a significant power threat, Stanton has lost his ability to play the outfield and is now strictly a designated hitter.
Throughout his career, he’s earned an MVP award, two Silver Sluggers, and five All-Star selections. Even though he has hit 117 home runs over the past four seasons, his frequent injuries have made it clear that the Yankees cannot depend on him for extended stretches of healthy play.
