The New York Yankees are likely to pursue a starting pitcher this season due to injuries to Gerrit Cole, Clarke Schmidt, and Luis Gil. While the starting rotation has managed so far, it could become a problem if the offense slows down.
One player frequently linked to the Yankees is Seattle Mariners’ starting pitcher Luis Castillo. Castillo, who has approximately $72 million remaining on his contract along with a 2028 vesting option, could be a trade target.
Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller recently highlighted Castillo as one of the top trade candidates for the season. “Although it might be too late now, the 32-year-old ace could still be available for trade this summer, especially if the Mariners’ offense continues to struggle,” Miller noted. “The challenge lies in finding a team that A) needs a starting pitcher, B) can afford Castillo’s contract, and C) has a surplus of bats that would benefit the Mariners. It may require a three-team deal to make it happen.”

Castillo’s trade value is complicated by his no-trade clause and the large sum remaining on his contract. However, the Yankees could be an ideal destination if Castillo is willing to accept a trade there.
New York could offer prospects like Spencer Jones or Everson Pereira to help strengthen Seattle’s offense while also taking on the remainder of Castillo’s contract. It remains to be seen whether the Mariners will consider trading him this season.
