After a longer-than-expected wait, the Kansas State men’s basketball team has lost its first player to the transfer portal this recruiting cycle. Macaleab Rich, an athletic wing who saw limited playing time as a sophomore this season, announced on Thursday that he plans to transfer to another team.
His departure was anticipated, as Rich had become the most likely candidate to leave K-State after coach Jerome Tang removed him from the rotation midway through the season. Rich appeared in just two of the team’s last 19 games.

Despite his limited role, Rich was popular among fans for his scoring ability, especially his impressive dunks. He averaged 5.9 points and 2.2 rebounds in 13 games, and although he didn’t have many standout performances, he had a few notable moments. His best game came in a road matchup against Wichita State, where he hit three 3-pointers and led the team with 19 points, though K-State lost 84-65.
Rich also scored eight points in games against Mississippi Valley State, Longwood, and TCU, but his playing time dwindled after a few conference matchups. For several reasons, he fell out of favor with Tang and struggled to get back into the rotation.
Now, Rich will look for a fresh opportunity elsewhere. His exit opens up an additional scholarship for K-State as the team prepares for the 2025-26 season. Along with Rich, the Wildcats are set to lose seniors David N’Guessan and Coleman Hawkins, although other players may still enter the transfer portal as the window remains open this month
