At the beginning of the season, the Chicago Cubs had high expectations for rookie third baseman Matt Shaw, who was slated to take on the primary role at third base. Shaw’s impressive spring training performance earned him a spot on the opening day roster, and the position seemed to be his to lose. However, Shaw struggled at the plate, posting just a .172 average in 58 at-bats over 18 games, which led to his demotion to Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs now hope Shaw can regain his form and the confidence he showed in spring training and last season.
With Shaw no longer in the major league fold, the third-base position has become a revolving door for the Cubs. Players like Jon Berti, Justin Turner, Gage Workman, and Vidal Bruján have all seen time at third, but none have managed to claim the job permanently. In response to these struggles, the Cubs have signed Gage Workman to a more permanent role, giving him another opportunity to prove himself and potentially stabilize the position.
As the Cubs continue to search for consistency at third base, they should also consider looking at external options to improve the position. One potential trade target is Rafael Devers of the Boston Red Sox, who has struggled since shifting to a full-time designated hitter role. Devers, with a .209 batting average and just two home runs this season, could benefit from a change of scenery, and joining the Cubs’ lineup alongside star Kyle Tucker could create a formidable offensive pairing.

Another option could be Nolan Arenado of the St. Louis Cardinals. While Arenado has been floated as a trade candidate for some time, the Cardinals’ lack of playoff contention this season makes it possible that he could be available at the trade deadline. However, a trade between the Cubs and Cardinals would require Arenado to waive his no-trade clause.
Lastly, Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies could also be on the Cubs’ radar. Despite a slow start this season, McMahon has been a consistent power hitter in the past, and a move to a contending team like the Cubs could help him find his form again. The Cubs will likely continue evaluating their options for third base, but the signing of Workman is a step toward stabilizing the position in the short term.
