MAJOR BOOST: Cubs’ Game-Changing Trade Lands $313M Red Sox All-Star Slugger in Chicago

The Chicago Cubs could be looking to make a major trade acquisition at the upcoming deadline, targeting Rafael Devers, the All-Star slugger from the Boston Red Sox. While Devers has faced early-season struggles, his past performance and potential make him an intriguing option for the Cubs, who could use a proven hitter in their lineup.

Devers, who had been the Red Sox’s primary third baseman for the last eight seasons, has recently shifted to a designated hitter role after the team signed Alex Bregman, a 2024 American League Gold Glove Award winner at third base. This transition hasn’t been easy for Devers, as he’s currently hitting just .202 with two home runs in 94 at-bats this season. However, he leads the American League with 21 walks, showcasing his keen eye at the plate.

Despite his slow start, Devers’ career numbers speak for themselves: a .278 batting average and 33 home runs per 162 games. Many expect him to break out of his slump, and the Cubs could be an ideal destination for him. According to Andrew Wright of Newsweek, a trade to Chicago would pair Devers with Kyle Tucker in a potent lineup, potentially creating one of the league’s most dangerous hitting duos.

Currently, the Cubs don’t have a clear-cut starter at third base after demoting top prospect Matt Shaw to Triple-A Iowa. Veterans like Justin Turner, Jon Berti, Gage Workman, and Vidal Brujan have been filling the gap, but none have solidified the position. Trading for Devers would give the Cubs a reliable everyday third baseman and bolster their already impressive offense. However, this move may only be temporary, as Shaw remains the Cubs’ third baseman of the future.

Acquiring Devers would undoubtedly require the Cubs to give up significant assets, including both experienced MLB players and top prospects, possibly even Shaw. However, Devers’ potential to elevate the Cubs’ lineup could make the trade well worth it, adding a consistent power hitter to the heart of their order for the long-term.
