BREAKING: Giants Land Defensive MVP in Free Agency After the Draft

The New York Giants made several upgrades during the 2025 NFL draft, addressing various positions, but they didn’t add a cornerback until the seventh round. As a result, it makes sense that they turned to free agency to secure a key defensive player. In a move that saw them beat out “a number of teams,” the Giants have reportedly signed South Carolina cornerback O’Donnell Fortune as an undrafted free agent, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Fortune, the Shrine Bowl Defensive MVP, had been weighing his options after receiving offers, including one from the Giants, which he held off on accepting until this past weekend. His decision to join the Giants makes him the third rookie defensive back the team has acquired this offseason, following the draft selection of Korie Black in the seventh round.

Despite impressing at the East-West Shrine Game, Fortune went undrafted, but his skills remained in demand, underscoring his defensive potential. The Giants’ cornerback room is filled with uncertainties, and Fortune’s physical style of play could provide a much-needed boost.

Known for his active defense, Fortune’s highlight-reel pick-six in the Shrine Bowl showed his playmaking ability. His physicality, particularly in open-field tackling, was noted by ESPN’s Mina Kimes, who praised his instincts and closing speed. His tough, downhill approach is what the Giants need to add some grit to a position that has often lacked tenacity.

With veterans like Paulson Adebo joining the team and Deonte Banks entering his second season, the Giants have made it clear they’re building a cornerback group with more aggression and versatility. Fortune fits into this mold perfectly, offering a combination of toughness and the potential to adapt quickly to defensive coordinator Shane Bowen’s schemes. The Giants’ pursuit of Fortune highlights their commitment to reinforcing the secondary with players who embody their physical, aggressive approach to defense.
