The Washington Commanders made further adjustments to their roster on Tuesday by signing veteran wide receiver Martavis Bryant and releasing kicker Ramiz Ahmed.
With Ahmed’s release, Riley Patterson is now the sole kicker on Washington’s roster. However, Coach Dan Quinn emphasized that Patterson’s position isn’t guaranteed.
“It’s still an open competition at that spot,” Quinn said before Tuesday’s practice. “We felt it was important to let Riley have these reps at Miami, both in practice and during the game.”
At 6-foot-4, Bryant brings a unique size to a Commanders’ wide receiver group that primarily features smaller, shiftier players.
“Martavis has a unique skill set. His size and length make him a valuable asset, especially in the red zone,” Quinn said, adding that the 32-year-old looks more like a linebacker than a wide receiver.
Bryant hasn’t played in the NFL since 2018 when he was with the Oakland Raiders. Since then, he’s been with teams in the Canadian Football League, the Indoor Football League, Fan Controlled Football, and the XFL.
He spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons on the Dallas Cowboys practice squad, where Quinn was the defensive coordinator.
“He’s in great shape, has the quickness we’re looking for, and is eager to improve,” Quinn said. “He’s been ready for this opportunity for a while now.”
